Assessment of Academic Librarians’ Perceptions and Readiness Toward Social Media Adoption for Library Service Promotion in Delta State Academic Institutions
Abstract
The rapid integration of social media into academic environments has significantly transformed information dissemination, user engagement, and service delivery in libraries. This study assesses academic librarians’ perceptions and readiness toward the adoption of social media for promoting library services and resources in academic institutions in Delta State, Nigeria. The increasing demand for digital communication channels has positioned social media as a strategic tool for enhancing library visibility, outreach, and user interaction. However, adoption levels among librarians remain inconsistent due to attitudinal, institutional, and infrastructural challenges.
Grounded in technology adoption and attitude formation theories, this research synthesizes prior scholarly works to evaluate how librarians perceive social media tools such as Facebook, WhatsApp, X (Twitter), and Instagram in relation to professional service delivery. The study further examines readiness factors including digital competence, institutional support, and perceived usefulness.
Findings from literature indicate that while many librarians recognize the potential of social media in improving library engagement, gaps persist in training, policy development, and strategic implementation. The study emphasizes that positive perception alone is insufficient without adequate readiness structures. It concludes that sustainable adoption requires institutional frameworks, continuous professional development, and strategic integration of social media into library operations.
The study contributes to the ongoing discourse on digital transformation in academic libraries and provides insights for policymakers, library administrators, and information professionals seeking to enhance service delivery through social media technologies.
