A Reference Architecture for Enterprise Cloud Modernization through OpenStack to Kubernetes Platform Transformation

4 Independent Researcher, USA

Abstract

Enterprise organizations are increasingly modernizing traditional OpenStack-based private cloud infrastructures to support cloud-native applications through Kubernetes platforms. This paper proposes a reference architecture for enterprise cloud modernization that provides a structured migration strategy covering infrastructure assessment, containerization, networking, storage integration, workload migration, security, continuous delivery, and operational governance. The proposed framework emphasizes platform standardization, automation, GitOps-based deployment practices, and operational resilience while minimizing migration risk and service disruption. The architecture enables organizations to improve scalability, infrastructure utilization, deployment agility, and lifecycle management without compromising enterprise security and governance. A practical implementation model is presented to assist organizations in planning and executing cloud transformation initiatives.
